FRONTLINE Special on Afghanistan: "Obama's War"

By October 16, 2009

As the Obama administration contemplates sending more troops to Afghanistan, PBS' FRONTLINE recently aired “Obama's War,” a timely documentary on the conflict in Afghanistan.

FRONTLINE correspondent Martin Smith places viewers in the middle of the conflict by revealing what is happening on the ground in Afghanistan. His stunning documentary reveals what the US faces to defeat the Taliban. It introduces viewers to the Afghan people who live in fear of the Taliban, US policy makers and advisers, and US troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Joanna Weis writes in the Boston Globe, “… With this clear-eyed and unsentimental view, Frontline invites respect for the risks and demands of foreign reporting. … More importantly, it gives us admiration -- and a great degree of sympathy -- for the Marines under fire...”

In a related development, BBC's Newsnight program reports President Barack Obama told the UK government it will soon announce a troop surge in Afghanistan. Newsnight believes the surge may be announced during next week's NATO defense ministers meeting in Bratislava. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs denied the report saying the president has not made a decision to send more troops to Afghanistan.

I strongly recommend watching “Obama's War.” This outstanding documentary gives viewers greater insight on the complexity of the conflict, and what is at stake if the United States fails in Afghanistan.
