Intern's Corner

America's Role in the Coming Decade

History has bestowed upon America a position in the world which no other country finds itself. We are in a position of prominence which has given us both the capability to preserve and promote our national interest, but also to profoundly affect the course of international relations. With that in mind, America must conduct its foreign policy with all of the circumspection which is fitting to such a responsibility. For America to withdraw from the world scene and simply act as an “offshore-balancer” while the normal balance of power supposedly maintains stability in the world would be an abandonment of the responsibility that fate hate has given us. It is not only in the interests of all Americans that we assume this responsibility, but it also vital to the development and peace of all nations. If America is not a primary player in global events, other ambitious and perhaps less desirable nations will fill the vacuum in regions throughout the world. It is nonsense to imagine a world in which any variation of isolationism can hope to preserve order. America’s responsibility is to use her power as both a force for good, and as a preserver of her national interests.
