Al-Qaeda-linked group claims TV bombing in Baghdad

An al-Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility Thursday for a bombing earlier this week targeting the Baghdad offices of a pan-Arab television station, describing the deadly attack that killed six people as a victory against a "corrupt channel."

A statement posted on the website of the Islamic State of Iraq said the operation was carried out by a "hero of Islam" and was intended to hit the "mouthpieces of the wicked and evil."

Body of second American sailor found in Afghanistan

A second U.S. Navy sailor who went missing in a dangerous part of eastern Afghanistan was found dead and his body recovered, a senior U.S. military official and Afghan officials said Thursday.

The family of Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, a 25-year-old from the Seattle area, had been notified of his death, the U.S. military official said on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to disclose the information.

Immigration demonstrations kick off in Arizona

Opponents of Arizona's hardline stance on illegal immigration launched a small religious procession from the state Capitol before dawn Thursday, the first of a series of demonstrations for the day the nation's strictest immigration law was due to take effect.

A federal judge Wednesday halted implementation of much of the law, known as SB1070, ruling it unconstitutional. But activists said they had to keep up the pressure on a state that has come to define the national debate over illegal immigration.

Civilian Casualties Dog Troops in Somalia

African and U.S. officials reaffirmed their support this week for the African Union-led battle against al Shabaab, the Islamist militant group that controls much of Somalia. But these international efforts are being hobbled as African troops come under criticism for indiscriminately shelling Somali civilians.

The battle to bring stability to long-lawless Somalia, and to win the sympathy of its people, has played out in a giant open-air market in Mogadishu, where Somalis who buy vegetables, spaghetti, clothing and fuel are now caught in the crossfire.
