9th MCPON James Herdt, USN (Ret.)

Jim Herdt retired from active duty in April 2002 after serving 35 years in the U. S. Navy, culminating in serving the final four years as the 9th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy.  As the senior most enlisted member of the U.S. Navy, his responsibilities included leading program and policy development for an enlisted force of over 400,000 personnel and serving as a principal advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations, Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Congress on all U.S. Navy personnel policies.

Considered an expert in the field of human resources management, training, and leadership, Jim was a major contributor to the Navy’s transformation of personnel programs and to the Navy’s revolution of training and education programs including their associated delivery systems.  He personally engineered and executed a major prerequisite for these efforts by successfully building and executing the momentum for change in a force of more than 39,000 Chief Petty Officers, the middle-level management of the U. S. Navy.  This change required overcoming the inertia of 109 years of tradition and culture to broaden the knowledge and leadership tools available to prepare the Chief Petty Officers to lead Navy transformation.

Jim distinguished himself during his 35 year Navy career serving in Command Master Chief leadership roles aboard a wide variety of Navy warships including the nuclear powered guided missile cruiser USS TEXAS, the fast attack submarine USS CINCINNATI, and the aircraft carrier USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT.  Among his numerous military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold star awards, Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal with gold star.

A native of Casper, Wyoming, he is a graduate of the U.S. Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy as well as the U.S. Army’s Sergeants Major Academy.  Jim has earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in human resource management from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Studies from State University of New York.

Jim is presently the CEO and President of Herdt Consulting, Inc., an independent consulting company specializing in leadership development, business solutions, institutional learning and training and IT software integration.  Herdt Consulting provides uniquely qualified consultants who have all reached the highest levels of senior enlisted leadership in the world’s greatest military. Each one of Jim’s consultants have been intimately involved in the defense wide transformation that was necessary to bring our military from the cold war era to a culture that can produce winning results in any corner of the world at any time.
